Sunny Kira, M.A. — a licensed Kindermusik educator, program director and credentialed primary school teacher who has dedicated her life to teaching for the past 15 years — believes it is a joyous gift to be in the company of children, and she is committed to providing the best music and early childhood development program for her students and their parents/caregivers. She believes that every child is musical and that through music the "whole child" can be nurtured and developed.

Sunny has been honored as a Kindermusik Maestro Educator, joining Kindermusik International's prestigious circle of select educators who provide high quality Kindermusik experience for children and famillies. Musikandmotion has been awarded "Maestro Top Program for exceptional service" for bringing music to the lives of children and connecting families in the Sacramento area.

Sunny also serves as the Regional Representative for Kindermusik educators in Northwest/Pacific States (Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington). She is honored to accept this position and shares a vision for making a difference in areas of collaboration and professional development among Kindermusik educators serving her region. This position is based on a peer appointed nomination by the Peer Advisory Board for Partnership of Kindermusik Educators.

In addition, Sunny is certified in Mastership Level 1 in Early Child Music from The Gordon Institute for Music Learning (GIML), an organization dedicated to "advancing the research in music education" and which applies Dr. Edwin Gordon's Music Learning Theory -- a comprehensive method toward the teaching of audiation, Dr. Gordon's term "for the ability to think music in the mind with understanding."


When Sunny's not teaching Kindermusik, you can find her performing with the award winning Sacramento Choral Society & Orchestra where she sings as a soprano 1 with its 180 choral member group. As an avid ballroom and Salsa dancer, she has also performed in the Spring 2005 Showcase at Salazar's Dance Studio and is an intermediate / advanced Silver Salsa level dancer! As part of her outreach programs, Sunny provides early childhood music programs to preschools and elementary schools in Natomas and West Sacramento. She also volunteers her time at Sutter Children's Memorial Hospital, bringing the joy of music to children at the hospital's outpatient areas.

Prior to directing and teaching her Kindermusik studio in Natomas, Sunny was a kindergarten and first grade teacher in the Natomas Unified School District. She also taught second, third, and fourth grades at the Garden Grove Unified School District in Southern California, and was a master teacher in both districts. She received her Master's degree in TESOL, an area of applied linguistics from California State University of Los Angeles in 1993. She has taught English as a Foreign Language to children and adults overseas.

Sunny participates in ongoing professional growth and development through conferences, workshops/meetings, and professional readings in a passionate effort to becoming a reflective pracitioner in the field of early childhood music education. She is a member of many organizations for music educators such as The Gordon Institute for Music Learning (GIML), MENC: The National Association for Music Education, The California Assoication for Music Educators (CMEA) Early Childhood Music & Movement Association (ECMM) and Northern California American Orff-Schulwerk Association.

Sunny currently lives in Natomas, Sacramento with her husband, David Kira, M.D., a board-certified ophthalmologist in Davis, California, and two pint-sized Maltese furbabies, "Sweet" Lucy and "Little" Ricky.
